“Rise up, Lazarus, from the dust….”
Author : Odelia Wang
Please allow me to tell you a long journey in a short version……
This studio unit is located in the community of Łazarz in Poznań. It was quite ruined and without utilities turned on for years. At the first glance, it appeared very cold and desolate; however, “Rise up, Lazarus” immediately came to my mind (“Oh, how suitable!” for its physical location) when I finally got to enter and saw this unit in 2015.
Obtaining this property for me as a foreigner is utterly similar to the story of Lazarus rising from the dead–There was this excruciating waiting before Jesus arrived in this famous biblical story. During such waiting, I was both “Mary and Martha” — It’s a trial for my own personal faith, perseverance and diligent work. Dear readers, please believe me when I say that I often and still think of having such studio renovation as “Mission Impossible”. However, I simply could not allow myself to give up such hope which has been in fact sustaining my efforts in pursuit–
Turn ashes into beauty.
“Turn ashes into beauty” is one very common saying I often share with my students from various unfortunate disadvantaged backgrounds. “Turn” is a verb; it takes action. Let’s act in faith, hope and love. There is indeed beauty hidden in all miseries and in waiting to be discovered.
This renovation project has just started. What I have always planned to do within this space later simply could not be described in one “blog”. As a matter of fact, I also don’t want to do so [blogging]. I’d rather continue to call in like-minded people–such as Aga, Bartek, Kaja, Kasia, Piotr and Steven who participated in the planning and executing the team effort on Feb. 9, 2019–to keep working on this process.
Let’s call this process the “Lazarus Effect” if we may. Indeed, “Rise up, Lazarus, from the dust. You shall have a new life once again.”
